Area Overview

Literally translated to Black Mountain, Gunung Hitam is not at all as scary as it sounds unless your imagination skills are unparalleled. It’s located relatively close to Sungai Gabai Waterfall and surprisingly, it hasn’t been trekked by many. The back-and-forth trail is approximately 15km in total, so you gotta bring extra water for this one. 

If you’re up for feeling at one with nature, Gunung Hitam is as “jungle” as it gets. Greens everywhere and lots of mosquitoes. It’s a mountain after all. The incline however, is pretty insane even for a mountain. It’s almost 1km total of straight climbing. If you’re a beginner or getting into hiking, stay away from Gunung Hitam until you’re fully ready to take on this mountain.

An interesting landmark to look out for is an abandoned orang asli hut. You can take a break there to catch your breath if you’re feeling exhausted. There are also plenty of sign boards throughout the trail in Gunung Hitam, so you don’t have to worry about getting lost. Besides that, there’s nothing much else to see if you’re looking for a good panoramic view. The peak does not offer much of a view but it’s said that Ampang and Kuala Lumpur can be spotted if the skies are clear. 

Things to note:

• For this vigorous hike, do bring along at least 2 liters of water along with you, and some extra in your car for when you’re done with the hike.
• Keep an eye out for leeches.
• Bring along hiking shoes with excellent traction as the trail can get pretty slippery after rains.
• Bring some food along. This hike will take hours to complete.
• Bring headlights just in case you need them.
